An information service for Queensland tenancy guidance

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 1 March 2026

1. Minimal Data Collection

QLD Rental AI Assist is designed to minimise data collection. We do not:

  • Create user accounts or require registration
  • Collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, or any identifying details
  • Store your chat conversations after your session ends
  • Use cookies or analytics that can identify you personally

We do use privacy-focused, cookieless analytics (Umami Cloud) to understand general site usage and improve the service. Details are provided in Section 3 below.

2. How Your Questions Are Processed

When you ask a question, your query is sent to Groq's API (a US-based AI inference service) to generate a response. The AI answers questions based on Queensland's Residential Tenancies Act and related legislation that has been provided to it. This happens in real-time, and:

  • Your questions are not stored on our servers
  • Chat history exists only in your browser during your session
  • Clearing your browser cache or closing the window removes your conversation

Groq may process queries to provide the AI service. For details on Groq's data practices, see Groq's Privacy Policy.

3. Website Analytics

This website uses Umami Analytics, a privacy-focused analytics service, to understand how visitors use the site. Umami helps us improve the service by providing anonymous usage statistics.

What Umami collects:

  • Page views and general usage patterns
  • Device type (desktop/mobile), browser, and screen size
  • Approximate geographic location (country/region only)
  • How you arrived at the site (referrer)

What Umami does NOT collect:

  • Personal identifiers (name, email, phone)
  • Data that can identify you individually
  • Cookie-based tracking
  • Cross-site tracking

Usage events we track:

  • When a chat question is submitted (question length and message count only — not the question text)
  • Which navigation links are clicked (e.g., disclaimer, RTA, QCAT links)
  • When a chat error occurs (error type only — no user content)

No personal information, question content, or identifying details are included in any analytics event.

Data is processed on Umami's cloud servers (cloud.umami.is), operated by Umami Software Inc. in the United States, and is aggregated anonymously. For details, see Umami's Privacy Policy.

4. Cookies

This service uses only essential technical cookies required for the chat interface to function. We do not use:

  • Advertising or marketing cookies
  • Cross-site tracking cookies
  • Third-party tracking pixels

5. Australian Privacy Principles (APPs)

This service is designed to comply with Australian privacy law. We are committed to:

  • APP 1 (Open and transparent management): This policy openly discloses our use of privacy-focused analytics and how data is handled.
  • APP 3 (Collection of personal information): We collect only anonymous, aggregated analytics data that cannot identify individuals.
  • APP 11 (Security of personal information): Since no personal information is stored, there is no personal information at risk of unauthorized access.

6. International Data Transfers

Data is processed by the following services located outside of Australia:

  • Groq (United States) — processes the text of your questions to generate AI responses. No personal information is intentionally sent.
  • Umami Cloud (United States) — receives anonymous analytics data (page views, device type, country, usage events). No personal information, question content, or IP addresses are stored by Umami.

Because no personal information is collected or transmitted to these services, cross-border disclosure obligations under APP 8 of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) are not triggered. We nonetheless disclose these transfers for full transparency.

7. Notifiable Data Breaches

Since we do not collect or store personal information, there is no personal information that could be subject to a notifiable data breach under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

8. Your Privacy Rights

Because we do not collect personal information, the following rights are not applicable:

  • Access to personal information (we have none)
  • Correction of personal information (we have none)
  • Deletion of personal information (we have none)

Your browser controls your session data. You can clear your chat history at any time by clearing your browser cache or simply closing the tab.

9. Children's Privacy

This service does not intentionally collect personal information from anyone, including children. Anonymous analytics data (page views, device type) is collected equally from all visitors. No age verification or parental consent is required because no identifying data is collected.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.

11. Contact & Questions

If you have questions about this privacy policy or how the service works, please contact us through the GitHub repository where this project is hosted, or consult the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) for guidance on Australian privacy law.
